I-SENSE Researchers at the 16th ITS European Congress – A Week of Impact & Innovation in Seville!

The I-SENSE Group of the Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (ICCS) – part of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) – proudly participated in the 16th ITS European Congress, which took place in Seville, Spain, from May 19 to 21, 2025, organized by ERTICO Europe and local partners. Held under the forward-looking theme “Clean, Resilient and Connected Mobility,” this year’s Congress gathered over 3,500 professionals, researchers, and policymakers from 71 countries across Europe and beyond, reaffirming its role as the continent’s premier platform for the advancement of intelligent transport systems and future mobility solutions.

With an impressive presence across the event, I-SENSE researchers made significant contributions to high-level discussions and shared cutting-edge research findings from several major European-funded projects. These included the ELABORATOR, PoDIUM, ENVELOPE, eCharge4Drivers, DELPHI_EU, EVENTS, and automotif eBRT2030 projects—each tackling crucial challenges in mobility, electrification, automation, and infrastructure.

One of the standout highlights of the Congress was the active role played by Dr. Angelos Amditis, ICCS R&D Director and Chairman of ERTICO – ITS Europe. Dr. Amditis delivered keynote speeches and represented both ICCS and ERTICO in key forums, including the opening and closing sessions and the high-level ITS Summit of Cities and Regions. His leadership further underscored I-SENSE’s strategic position at the forefront of European transport innovation.

The I-SENSE team also participated in 9 Special Interest Sessions and 2 Technical Sessions, addressing vital topics such as multimodal automation, road safety, the deployment of electric vehicles, connected and cooperative automated mobility (CCAM), and space-based mobility technologies. These sessions served not only as showcases for research excellence but also as collaborative spaces where emerging mobility paradigms were openly explored.

Among the I-SENSE researchers contributing to the Congress were Dr Giannis Karaseitanidis, Dr. Vasilis Sourlas, Dr Evangelia Portouli, Dr Anna Antonakopoulou, Dr John Kanellopoulos, Christina Anagnostopoulou, Evangelia (Geli) Latsa, and Dr Ioanna Doutsou. Their expertise and dedication played a key role in ensuring I-SENSE’s strong visibility and engagement throughout the event.

Participation in events like the ITS European Congress enables the I-SENSE Group to strengthen its collaborations, disseminate impactful research, and influence the direction of transport innovation across Europe. As the challenges facing mobility systems continue to evolve, the contributions of research groups like I-SENSE are vital to ensuring that future transport networks are sustainable, intelligent, and inclusive.
