The ENVELOPE project continues to demonstrate how advanced network capabilities can address practical challenges in Connected and Automated Mobility (CAM), through innovative solutions developed and tested by projects funded under its Open Calls.
Two examples, 6G-NOW and REACT-5G, showcase complementary approaches to improving communication resilience, network performance and the reliability of connected mobility services.
6G-NOW: Enhancing Resilient Communications for Connected Mobility
The 6G-NOW project explores a network-of-networks architecture designed to support more resilient communications for connected and automated vehicles. Its approach combines conventional 5G connectivity with direct device-to-device (D2D) communication through the 5G NR Sidelink (PC5) interface, enabling intelligent traffic steering according to network conditions.
Recent experimentation and demonstration activities at the NCSR “Demokritos” facilities in Athens validated the project’s D2D-aware Access Traffic Steering, Switching and Splitting (ATSSS) framework. The activities were carried out by the 6G-NOW team with technical support the I-SENSE Group of ICCS/NTUA and NCSR “Demokritos”.
These demonstrations show the potential of multi-connectivity and direct communication technologies to improve service continuity and resilience in future connected mobility applications.

REACT-5G: Making Remote Vehicle Diagnostics More Reliable
REACT-5G addresses another important challenge: ensuring reliable connectivity during remote vehicle diagnostics and electronic control unit (ECU) reprogramming.
The solution combines 5G and Wi-Fi connectivity through multi-connectivity capabilities exposed by the ENVELOPE platform. By using multiple communication paths, it aims to maintain diagnostic sessions even when one connection becomes unavailable.
Validated at the ENVELOPE Greek Trial Site, operated by NCSR “Demokritos” and OTE, the solution achieved a 44 ms 95th-percentile diagnostic round-trip latency, below its 50 ms target. The trials also recorded a 100% completion rate for diagnostic and ECU flashing sessions, compared with approximately 85% in the single-connection baseline.
These results demonstrate how ENVELOPE’s network capabilities can support demanding applications that require reliable connectivity, with potential applications extending beyond automotive diagnostics.

Turning Network Innovation into Practical Solutions
Together, 6G-NOW and REACT-5G illustrate how the ENVELOPE Open Calls support the development and validation of innovative solutions for connected mobility. By combining advanced connectivity mechanisms with experimentation in real-world test environments, these initiatives contribute to more resilient communication systems and help demonstrate the practical value of next-generation network capabilities.
