I-SENSE at Connecting Europe Days 2026

From 28 September to 1 October 2026, Brussels became a meeting point for Europe’s transport and mobility community as Connecting Europe Days 2026 brought together policymakers, industry leaders, researchers, financial institutions and transport stakeholders to discuss how Europe can build a more competitive, resilient, safe and sustainable transport system.

The I-SENSE Group of the Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (ICCS) of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), which coordinates the EU-funded HIDDEN, ELABORATOR, BATTERY2LIFE and CHORUS projects, represented all four projects at the event. The projects were among the innovative initiatives showcased during Connecting Europe Days 2026.

Together, these projects address key challenges in Europe’s transition towards smarter, safer and more sustainable mobility:

  • HIDDEN focuses on improving the safety of connected and automated vehicles through hybrid intelligence, enabling them to detect pedestrians, cyclists and other road users hidden from their direct line of sight and make safer, more informed decisions.
  • ELABORATOR promotes safer, more inclusive and sustainable urban mobility through co-designed interventions and Living Labs across European cities, supporting the transition towards climate-neutral urban environments.
  • BATTERY2LIFE advances battery circularity by developing smart battery management systems and innovative solutions that enable used electric vehicle batteries to be safely repurposed for second-life energy storage applications.
  • CHORUS aims to improve traffic safety and efficiency by developing an integrated framework for coordinating automated and conventional vehicles, public transport and other mobility services within increasingly complex urban transport environments.

For I-SENSE, the event provided an important opportunity to share the work of these projects with a diverse European audience, exchange knowledge with fellow researchers and industry representatives, and connect with stakeholders working towards the future of transport in Europe. The team was represented by Jason Sioutis, Maria Tsirigoti and Sevi Christoforou.
