The Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (ICCS), coordinator of the Horizon Europe project CHOICE, is proud to announce the launch of the Shrink Your Food Waste mobile application, now available free of charge for Android devices on Google Play.
Now in its final year, CHOICE is a Horizon Europe research and innovation project that aims to improve climate action in the food, agriculture and land-use sectors by integrating behavioural insights and citizen engagement into climate modelling and decision-making. By combining advanced modelling approaches, behavioural science and digital technologies, the project seeks to bridge the gap between scientific evidence and everyday consumer choices, supporting Europe’s transition towards climate neutrality.
As part of this effort, I-SENSE research team developed ‘Shrink Your Food Waste’, an innovative application designed to help citizens better understand and reduce the environmental impact of their dietary choices.
The app enables users to plan their daily meals, record the food products they purchase and instantly view the associated carbon footprint (CO₂) using product-level emissions data. It also offers engaging data stories on sustainable eating, an integrated sustainability assistant that answers users’ questions and recommends lower-impact alternatives, as well as interactive quizzes and challenges that encourage more sustainable habits. Weekly progress reports allow users to monitor their environmental footprint over time and see how small changes in their eating behaviour can lead to meaningful reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.
Shrink Your Food Waste demonstrates how European research can be transformed into practical digital solutions that empower citizens, raise environmental awareness and support more sustainable everyday decisions.
