ICCS at TRA 2026: Advancing the Next Generation of Smart and Sustainable Mobility

The I-SENSE Research Group of the Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (ICCS)  had a strong presence at the Transport Research Arena (TRA) 2026, Europe’s flagship conference on transport research and innovation, held this year in Budapest, Hungary between 19 and 21 May 2026.

Organized every two years under the initiative of the European Commission and leading European transport stakeholders, TRA is the largest European conference dedicated to transport and mobility research. The 2026 edition, themed “Re-Generation in Transport”, focused on the transformation of mobility systems through innovation, sustainability, digitalization, artificial intelligence, connectivity, and collaboration.

ICCS was represented by ICCS Research Director Dr. Angelos Amditis, together with Katia Pagle, Geli Latsa, John Kanellopoulos, Anastasia Roukouni, and Christos Ballis, who actively contributed to scientific discussions, project activities, networking sessions, and stakeholder engagement throughout the event.

The conference brought together researchers, industry leaders, policymakers, innovators, and civil society representatives from across Europe to explore the future of transport systems and mobility ecosystems. Strategic discussions focused on interoperability, large-scale deployment, logistics ecosystems, autonomous mobility, and the integration of next-generation digital technologies into transport infrastructures.

Researchers from the I-SENSE Group/ICCS participated in several scientific and project-related activities, presenting outcomes and lessons learned from European research initiatives shaping the future of smart mobility and logistics.

Among the key contributions:

  • Poster Presentation:

“Cross-Pilot Integration of Automated Logistics: Insights from AutoMoTIF”, Presented by Anastasia Roukouni within the framework of the AutoMoTIF project.

  • Scientific Publication Presentation:

“Deploying autonomous demand-responsive transport services for people and goods in Trikala, Greece: operational challenges and lessons learnt”, Presented by Christos Ballis in the context of the SHOW and in2CCAM projects.

  • BERTHA Workshop Contribution:

HIDDEN’s work also reached the TRA 2026 audience through BERTHA’s workshop on ‘Integrating Human Behaviour into Autonomous Driving’, where our partner Johanna Tzanidaki (SAE Europe) presented our group’s flagship CCAM project’s research on behavioural modelling in autonomous driving.

  • PIONEERS project pitch:

Giannis Kanellopoulos presented PIONEERS Legacy and key outcomes along with a partner from the Port of Venlo at the PIONEERS project booth.

Research on “Gender perspectives in inclusive mobility” was also presented within the framework of the ELABORATOR project by Urbana partner.

In parallel, ICCS researchers engaged with the broader European innovation ecosystem through participation at the ALICE booth, alongside AutoMoTIF activities, as well as at the PIONEERS booth, strengthening collaborations and visibility for ongoing European initiatives.

TRA 2026 highlighted the growing importance of integrated, intelligent, and human-centric mobility systems capable of addressing Europe’s environmental, societal, and technological challenges. The active participation of ICCS and the I-SENSE Research Group reaffirmed their leading role in advancing research and innovation across smart mobility, logistics, connected transport, and sustainable transportation systems.

Through scientific excellence, cross-sector collaboration, and participation in large-scale European initiatives, ICCS continues to contribute to the development of resilient and future-ready mobility ecosystems in Europe.
