Artificial Intelligence in Mobility in Practice: The 1st ITS Hellas Co-Creation Workshop

The 1st Co-Creation Workshop on Artificial Intelligence in Mobility, organized by ITS Hellas, was successfully held on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at the ACG Plaka Building of The American College of Greece, introducing a new approach to collaborative dialogue in the field of Intelligent Transport Systems in Greece.

The Workshop brought together more than 40 selected participants, representing public authorities, industry, businesses, and the research community, with the aim of co-developing concrete proposals and pilot actions for leveraging Artificial Intelligence in the Greek mobility ecosystem.

Opening remarks & keynote speeches

The event opened with a keynote address by Dr. Angelos Amditis, President of ITS Hellas, R&D Director at ICCS/NTUA, and President of ERTICO – ITS Europe, who highlighted the critical role of Artificial Intelligence in transforming the transport and mobility ecosystem.

This was followed by keynote speeches from distinguished representatives of both the public and private sectors:
– Vasilis Karkatzounis, Secretary General for Artificial Intelligence and Data Governance, Ministry of Digital Governance
– Victoria Kalfaki, Head of Public Sector GR & CY, Google
– Lykourgos Manoliadis, Deputy General Manager, Diakinisis
– Petros Fortsakis, Chief Operating & Commercial Officer, OSeven

The presentations highlighted the transition from mobility data to actionable insights through Artificial Intelligence, as well as current applications in areas such as road safety, transport management, and sustainable mobility.

Thematic areas & co-creation process

The workshop focused on three key thematic areas:
– Artificial Intelligence for Road Safety, Traffic Management & Urban Mobility / Mobility as a Service
– Artificial Intelligence for Freight Transport & Logistics
– Artificial Intelligence for Green, Inclusive & Sustainable Mobility

Participants were distributed across six thematic roundtables, where they actively engaged in a structured four-step co-creation methodology, including:
– identification of AI use cases,
-mapping of best practices,
-identification of key challenges, and
formulation of action proposals and pilot initiatives.

This process led to meaningful and actionable outcomes, which will be presented in the coming period.

Facilitation & participation

The success of the workshop was strongly supported by the facilitators of the thematic roundtables:
– Evangelos Mitsakis (CERTH/HIT)
– Panagiotis Zikos (iLINK New Technologies)
– Athina Tsirimba (The American College of Greece)
– Konstantinos Chaniotis (Telenavis)
– Vasilis Mizaras (DeepTraffic)
– Anna Antonakopoulou (ICCS/NTUA)

The overall coordination of the roundtable process was led by George Megas (ICCS/ISENSE), while the organization and communication of the event were supported by Dimitris Maragkos and Nadia Skepetari.

Sponsors & hosting

Special thanks are extended to the event sponsors ICCS, CERTH, and Salfo for their valuable support, as well as to The American College of Greece (ACG) for hosting the workshop at the Demos Center of the ACG Plaka Building.

Next steps

Through this initiative, ITS Hellas further strengthens its role as a platform for collaboration between the public and private sectors, actively contributing to the development of a coherent framework for the use of Artificial Intelligence in transport.

The outcomes of the workshop are expected to serve as a foundation for:
the establishment of thematic working groups,
the development of pilot projects, and
the formulation of policy recommendations at national level.
