Accelerating Europe’s Circular and Climate-Neutral Transition

Climate mitigation via decarbonization and circularity are not fully coordinated, and they are currently analyzed only at global or national level. Their coupling and integration into Industrial-Urban Symbiosis (I-US) and Hub4Circularity (H4C) ecosystems and their specialization at regional and local level, could offer determinant environmental, economic and social benefits towards a climate-neutral and sustainable EU. This coupling requires coordination among industrial/ urban key actors in domains related to emissions, materials, energy, water, waste, mobility, infrastructures, economic and business models, strategic and spatial planning and governance.

SYSTEMICO will develop a systemic multisectoral multi-stakeholder approach, developing joint actions for coupling circularity and climate mitigation in industry, cities and regions, in four demonstration and three (3) replication sites around Europe, linked to five EU Mission Cities and three Circular Cities and Regions Initiative (CCRI) activities’ sites, supporting the implementation of the “Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities (2025)” Mission, and connected with other initiatives such as with H4Cs and Regional Innovation Valleys (RIV).

SYSTEMICO will contribute to the three main outcomes of the topic, providing advances to climate mitigation and circularity, increase regional capacity for innovations, and creating regional ecosystems for long term sustainability, defining relevant indicators and metrics for 2030. It will apply a spiral approach, starting from existing structures and resulting in a common structure in urban, peri-urban and industrial environments, towards a Holistic Regional System (HRS), combining activities and specialties and involving key actors from authorities and industry. Each HRS will facilitate the cooperation of the different structures, dealing with at least two key value chains and economic sectors, including the enhancing or/and the expanding of these existing domains.
