CERTAIN (Resilient and Continuous Safety Assurance Methodology for CCAM and its HMI Components) is a 36-month Horizon Europe RIA project (June 2025 – May 2028) with 25 partners from 11 countries.
CERTAIN will create a comprehensive safety assurance framework for CCAM systems, prioritizing Safety, Trust, Acceptance, and Comfort (STAC) throughout the vehicle lifecycle and facilitating the swift integration of trustworthy AI-based (sub)systems. By ensuring that CCAM systems are designed to adapt to the cognitive complexity of human road users, this approach will foster user trust and acceptance, ultimately leading to increased market penetration. CERTAIN will deliver a resilient, human-centric, and continuous safety assurance methodology for CCAM, enabling “Scenario-based safety assurance of CCAM and related HMI in a dynamically evolving transport system.” To achieve this, the project will collaborate with key public and private stakeholders to align efforts, ensuring the longevity and usability of the project’s outputs.
The Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (ICCS) plays a leading role in CERTAIN as leader of WP5 – Validation methodology for V2X systems. In this capacity, ICCS develops methods and tools to assess Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication within the Safety Assurance Framework, ensuring interoperability, robustness, and reliability of connected and automated mobility functions. In addition to this leadership role, ICCS contributes to several other parts of the project, from the HMI assessment to the verification of Proof-of-Concept tools for In-Service Monitoring and Reporting (ISMR)—combining real-world tests with simulation environments—and from simulation and system testing to dissemination and stakeholder engagement activities, helping to maximize the impact and uptake of the project results.
