What does rural–urban innovation look like in practice?
The new official video of RURBANIVE brings this to life — showcasing how collaborative research, co-creation and real-world experimentation are reshaping connections between rural and urban communities across Europe.
RURBANIVE project, coordinate by our research team, is building immersive innovation ecosystems that strengthen rural–urban synergies. Through 7 Rural-Urban Co-Creation Labs and a consortium of 17 partners, the project develops practical, locally grounded solutions that improve wellbeing, governance and prosperity across rural-urban landscapes.
At the heart of the project are six Rural-Urban Enablers (RUEs) — real-world innovations demonstrating key domains where rural and urban areas connect and co-develop:
RURBANIVE’s Six Rural-Urban Enablers:
- Improving logistics and shortening value chains — socially driven digital platforms and services that connect producers, shorten supply chains and strengthen rural-urban economic flows.
- Ecosystem and biodiversity restoration — nature-based restoration solutions that enhance ecological health and multifunctional landscapes.
- Regional circular bioeconomy development — local circular economy initiatives that optimise resource flows and generate new regional opportunities.
- User engagement, empowerment, society and territorial awareness — co-creation frameworks that foster participation, local empowerment and equitable development.
- Culture, landscape and heritage access and promotion — cognitive and digital tools that enrich cultural engagement and sustainable tourism.
- Enhanced mobility — data-driven mobility modelling and tools to improve connectivity between urban centres and rural communities.
The video introduces RURBANIVE’s vision, explains how these enablers work in practice, and shows how research outcomes are translated into accessible tools with tangible territorial impact.
