The pilot demonstration of ΑPSIM project at the Epigraphic Museum of Athens was carried out with great success!
On Monday June 16, Tina Katika, Kostas Koukoudis, Nikos Desypris, Spyros Bolierakis, Thomas Papaioannou, Irini Krimpa, Fotis Yariskanis, Panagiotis Sakaridis and Christos Maroglou from our research team and Anda Papacharisi and Giorgos Loumos from GEOANALYSIS and COMIC, respectively, visited the Epigraphic Museum of Athens to present and test APSIM’s VR and AR applications.
APSIM’s VR application for the Epigraphic Museum was focused on re-creating using 3D models the arsenal of Philon in Peiraeus, the building where the hanging tuckle of the military fleet were stored, allowing users to visit the building virtually wearing a special VR headset. Moreover, using the AR application circulAR for smartphones, the Epigraphic Museum executives had the pleasure to admire without special equipment, the asernal of Philon in the physical space and move around learning the history of the arsenal. The APSIM project (Applications of Situated Simulations) aims to promote the Greek culture using innovative technologies. Using AR and VR applications, visitors of archaeological sites and museums will have the opportunity to enjoy a completely different tour-experience in the archaeological sites, resembling one of a video gaming! In particular, the visitors, using their smartphone, will be able to admire the exhibits they select in their original form. They will be able to move and rotate their device, enjoying an interactive visiting experience.
The applications impressed the museum’s task force, who mentioned the significant contribution of such projects in upgrading the experience of visiting archaeological sites and museums in Greece!
Our research group is coordinating the APSIM project, which is expected to finalize its research activities in October.
