L3 PILOT, a flagship project on autonomous driving at ITS Hamburg 2021

The world’s largest and most prominent event focused on smart mobility and the digitalization of transportation, the ITS World Congress 2021 took place on 11-15 October 2021 at Hamburg(Germany). This year’s topic was “Experience Future Mobility Now” and within the frame of the event, the consortium of the EU funded project, L3PILOT, organized on October 12th, 2021 a special session entitled “Continuous Automated Driving: Large-scale trials on public roads and defragmented operational design domains”.

Four experts from the field of Automated Driving(AD) representing prestigious organizations of the L3PILOT consortium (VTT, Stellantis-CRF, ika, RENAULT) talked about the tests that the project made in SAE L3 and L4 functions on public roads, including cross-border activities in seven countries. The next steps of this research activity were showcased as the Hi-Drive project will push AD from L3 further up towards High Automation by demonstrating in large-scale trials the robustness and reliability of CAD functions in challenging environments

Later on, the key results from the L3Pilot trials and challenges currently hindering the progress of developments in vehicle automation along with strategies to eliminate the fragmentations in the Operational Design Domain were discussed.

The discussion was moderated by the L3Pilot project partner, ISENSE Group with its Director Dr. Angelos Amditis.

L3Pilot Final Event

The L3Pilot Final Event was held on 13-14 October 2021 in conjunction with the ITS World Congress in Hamburg, Germany. The L3Pilot researchers, leading experts in the field of Automated Driving, presented the project’s research work of more than four years of joint effort made by 34 partners from 12 countries across Europe. Findings and challenges were unveiled with more than ten L3Pilot fully equipped test cars drove on public roads in and around Hamburg demonstrating the motorway and urban chauffeur. Overall, 450 m² of exhibition area displayed 13 L3Pilot test cars and featured an exhibition with videos, presentations and posters explaining project results.

ISENSE Group, as project partner, attended the sessions made during of both days of the L3Pilot Final Event and participated to the urban driving demo held on 14/10.
