I-SENSE showcases the SINFONICA Knowledge Map Explorer: A New Tool for Inclusive CCAM

Over the past three years, the SINFONICA project has worked to make Cooperative, Connected and Automated Mobility (CCAM) more inclusive, accessible, and user-centric. CCAM Division at the I-SENSE Group of ICCS proudly led the development of one of SINFONICA’s flagship tool: the Knowledge Map Explorer. The Knowledge Map Explorer is a decision support system designed for policymakers, planners, and developers working on citizen-focused CCAM strategies. Its architecture does more than store information: it systematically organises quantitative evidence (survey results, measurable indicators) alongside qualitative perspectives (insights, concerns, and expectations gathered through interviews, workshops, and focus groups). Collected in four European contexts — Greece, Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK — these inputs ensure the tool reflects a broad spectrum of cultural, social, and geographical realities.

This integrated approach means CCAM deployment strategies are informed not only by numbers but also by the real experiences of citizens. Crucially, the Knowledge Map Explorer brings forward the voices of groups often overlooked in mobility planning — including women, people with disabilities, and rural residents — and embeds them in the decision-making framework. In this way, it transforms diverse stakeholder inputs into structured, actionable guidance, supporting the development of inclusive, equitable, and sustainable mobility solutions.

This August, we showcased the Knowledge Map Explorer at two key SINFONICA events:

  • Capacity-Building Webinar: Planning for Connected and Automated Public Transport – How to engage with citizens (25 August 2025)

Our ICCS colleague Konstantinos Fokeas demonstrated how the tool helps involve citizens in shaping mobility solutions. The webinar also featured real-world experiences, from Hamburg’s complex stakeholder engagement to Trikala’s successful citizen participation model.

  • SINFONICA Final Event (28 August 2025, Brussels)

At the closing event, which brought together over 70 stakeholders from across Europe, the KME was featured in the interactive marketplace alongside other project outputs. Policymakers, researchers, and industry leaders explored how the tool supports inclusive decision-making for CCAM, ensuring the voices of diverse communities are reflected in deployment strategies.

By mapping, structuring, and synthesising user needs and expectations, the Knowledge Map Explorer introduces a new paradigm for decision-making in CCAM. It helps policymakers and designers move beyond technology-driven solutions to ones that are inclusive, equitable, and socially accepted.

The SINFONICA journey has shown that mobility innovation works best when citizens are at the centre. With the Knowledge Map Explorer, we’ve taken a step forward in making that principle actionable.
