CirculAR app brings climate adaptation stories into Augmented Reality – powered by the PALIMPSEST project

PALIMPSEST, a 3.5 project funded under the New European Bauhaus initiative has concluded its research path recently but PALIMPSEST was not only a research project. It was an epic journey shaped by animated dialogues, intense experimentation, and a rich collective learning process. At its core, the project explored how urban practices can be transformed through culture, creativity, technology and care. Its legacy is already visible: in the processes it activated, in the shifts of mindset it fostered, in the knowledge it produced, and in the new collective imaginaries it helped to shape.

Our research team participated in the project with a double role, as the Communication Manager of the project and on the technical side by developing two AR campaigns on the project’s pilots.

Our XR team, together with the Jerez Landscape Pilot curators – Nomad Garden, developed an AR campaign for Jerez de la Frontera in the CirculAR app which invites users to explore how cultural heritage and traditional practices can inspire more climate-resilient cities.

Set in Jerez de la Frontera — a city known for its flamenco heritage, vineyards, and the traditional Zambombas celebrations — the AR experience reimagines urban public space through living vine canopies and ceramic cooling devices inspired by local knowledge and seasonal rituals.

As extreme heat increasingly affects Mediterranean cities, the campaign showcases how nature-based solutions developed within the PALIMPSEST Landscape Pilot and the SONE Project can help cool historic urban environments. In summer 2025, Jerez recorded temperatures of 45.8°C, highlighting the urgent need for innovative and community-driven climate adaptation strategies.

Through the CirculAR app, users can:
– Place interactive vine canopies in urban spaces
– Explore ceramic climate adaptation objects in AR
– Experiment with shade, form, and cooling potential
– Reimagine public space through immersive interaction

The campaign transforms climate adaptation into an accessible and playful experience, connecting cultural memory, landscape knowledge, and emerging technologies.
