Athens Welcomes UITP’s Research in Mobility Committee for Strategic Meeting on Urban Transport Innovation

On May 8–9, the Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (ICCS) and our I-SENSE Group had the honour of hosting the 11th Meeting of the Research in Mobility Committee (RIMC) of the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) in Athens, Greece.

Held at the center of Athens, this high-level gathering brought together a group of key experts and stakeholders from the European research and innovation ecosystem in urban mobility. The meeting is part of a long-standing collaboration between ICCS and UITP, aiming to strengthen the bridge between academia, research institutions, and public transport practitioners.

UITP (International Association of Public Transport) is a global network promoting sustainable urban mobility. It brings together public transport authorities, operators, researchers, and industry stakeholders from over 100 countries. Founded in 1885, UITP supports innovation, best practices, and policy development in public transport.
It serves as a platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration across the mobility sector. UITP advocates for public transport as the backbone of livable, sustainable cities. ICCS and I-SENSE GROUP is a member of UITP.

The RIM Committee was established in 2020 to support UITP’s mission of maintaining public transport as the backbone of sustainable urban mobility. By fostering dialogue and partnerships among researchers and mobility professionals, the Committee plays a vital role in aligning innovation with the evolving needs of cities and their transit systems.

As is customary with RIMC meetings, the two-day agenda included a technical visit to local public transport infrastructure. Participants toured the Operation Control Centre of Athens Metro Lines 2 & 3, gaining first-hand insight into the city’s public transport operations and digital systems.

The meeting included contributions from Christos Ballis (I-SENSE Group of ICCS) and also others representatives of UITP, OASA (Athens Urban Transport Organisation), and NTUA (National Technical University of Athens), among others. Discussions focused on the future of urban mobility, emerging research priorities, and opportunities for European collaboration in the field.

This successful gathering reaffirmed the central role of innovation and research in shaping the next generation of public transport solutions, with ICCS and its I-SENSE Group continuing to be at the forefront of this evolving dialogue.
