The I-SENSE Annual Conference 2025 took place from 9 to 12 October, unfolding between the beautiful settings of Porto Heli and Spetses. More than 150 researchers, collaborators, and invited speakers came together for three inspiring days filled with innovation, knowledge, creativity, and collaboration. Hosted at the elegant AKS Hotels, the conference provided the ideal environment for scientific exchange, interactive sessions, and team-building activities that strengthened our collective spirit.
🔹 A rich program and vibrant moments
This year’s agenda was as dynamic as ever, featuring multiple sessions and thematic workshops that highlighted cutting-edge research and forward-looking ideas, live demos showcasing the latest technological developments across our teams, and team-building activities where laughter was, as always, the ultimate winner. The conference concluded with our participation in the Spetses Mini Marathon 2025, where we ran together under our motto: 🏃♀️ Run beyond Limits, Innovate beyond Borders.
- The first day of the conference opened with a welcome addresses by Prof, John Psarras, Dr Angelos Amditis and Dr Giannis Karaseitanidis. The morning continued with the keynote “40 Years of Discovery at the Edge of Nanotechnology” (Prof Kyriakos Porfyrakis, Greenwich University), setting an inspiring tone for the sessions ahead. The SIS Session featured a series of cutting-edge presentations, including “Cal/Val – Super Resolution – In-situ” (George Tsimiklis, Theodoros Giannakas), “GenAI for Hyperspectral Data” (George Arvanitakis), “3D Scene Understanding” (Vasilis Baldas), “Future Sorting Systems” (Fotis Konstantinidis, Konstantinos Kokkalis), and “Operator 5.0 – Digital Twins” (Kostas Naskou). After the lunch break, the agenda continued with “Moving HPC Workloads Instead of Transferring Energy: Rethinking Sustainability, Scheduling, and Systems at Scale” (Panagiotis Tsanakas), followed by “Reconstructing the World from Images” (George Kopanas). The day concluded with the thought-provoking session “Valley of Death: From Research to Market” (Kostas Chaniotis, Telenavis), highlighting the challenges and opportunities in bridging innovation and commercialization.
- During the second day and focusing on advanced technologies for safety, health, and rescue operations, the first session included “Advanced Vision Intelligence and Connectivity for Robotic Search and Rescue” (Spyros Athanasiadis, Nikos Mitros, Thanasis Douklias) and “Breath Analysis-Based Cancer Biomarker Identification: Promising, Yet Still Challenging” (Yiannis Gallos,). The program also featured a session dedicated to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) practices within I-SENSE, highlighting the group’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and forward-looking research environment (Despina Kaneti)
- Other sessions expored the intersection of AI, connectivity, and mobility : “When AI Controls Hardware: Pursuing Safety Beyond the Digital Realm” (Anastasia Bolovinu, George Chatzipavlis), “From SMAShed Tech to Data Space Odyssey: Every Trip Starts with a Little PISTIS” (Vangelis Tsougiannis, Kostas Fokeas, Thomas Doukas), “Predictive QoS” (Dinos Katsaros), “Enabling Next-Gen Services with 5G and Network-as-Code (CAMARA APIs, Quality on Demand, Connectivity Insights, and ATSSS)” (Pavlos Basaras), and “From Fragmentation to Integration: Navigating the Way Towards Green and Automated Freight Transport, Logistics, and Maritime Operations” (Anastasia Roukouni).
Welcoming a (very special) new team member
We were thrilled to introduce the newest member of our research family — our robotic dog, a symbol of innovation and an exciting new contributor to our ongoing projects in robotics and artificial intelligence.
Moments to remember
The conference, apart from an academic gathering — it was a reminder that research is not just a discipline, but a living, breathing force that connects minds and shapes the future.Warm thanks to everyone who participated, presented, and contributed to the success of this year’s event with their knowledge, enthusiasm, and creativity.
Team Bonding Activities: Innovation Through Connection
From interactive games to creative challenges, our team bonding moments were filled with energy and laughter.
Colleagues became teammates, ideas flowed beyond meeting rooms, and collaboration came to life.
A vibrant reminder that behind every innovation, there’s a strong and connected team.
