Alternative routes for basic chemicals production using hydrogen as feedstock

ALCHEMHY is an Horizon Europe funded project focused on developing innovative electrified processes for the sustainable production of ammonia and methanol, two essential platform chemicals. By leveraging cutting-edge technologies such as the Magnetic-Heated Sorption-Enhanced Reactor (MSER), Direct ElectroSynthesis of Ammonia (DESA), Small-Flexible Methanol Reactor (SFMR), and Plasma-Catalytic Hydrogenation (PCH), the project aims to decarbonize production and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

Through optimized process configurations, novel materials, and catalyst development, ALCHEMHY will enable milder operating conditions, enhanced efficiency, and decentralized production integrated with renewable energy sources. The project will demonstrate its processes at TRL 6 and conduct technoeconomic assessments (TEA) in two key use cases: integrated ammonia and caprolactam production and refinery decarbonization via CCU and methanol-to-olefin processes.

Supported by dynamic process modeling, digital twin technologies, and a decision support system (DSS), ALCHEMHY will help shape a more sustainable, competitive, and resilient European chemical industry, reducing dependency on imported fossil fuels and fostering green job creation. The project unites 16 partners across 7 EU countries, bringing together expertise in chemistry, engineering, and industrial innovation to drive the future of low-carbon chemical manufacturing.
