Following an invitation of the European Commission, industry representatives and public authorities have agreed  on a shared vision for the coordinated deployment of Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) in Europe and issued a respective report as a guidance on how the EU can make the most of connected cars. This considers as an important step towards connected cars as C-ITS enable vehicles to communicate with each other and with the infrastructure. This can notably improve road safety and reduce congestion. The report was published on Thursday 21 January 2016 by the European Commission (DG Connect) and can be found through the following link: This report is the result of the one year work performed in the framework of the C-ITS Platform of the European Commission. 

The Platform for the Deployment of Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems in the European Union (C-ITS Platform) was launched by the Commission in July 2014, and met for the first time in November 2014.The objective of the C-ITS platform was to identify and agree on how to ensure interoperability of C-ITS across borders and along the whole value chain, as well as to identify the most likely and suitable deployment scenario(s). These include the first vehicleto-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) services to be deployed across the EU and their most beneficial geographical environments (long distance corridors, secondary roads and the urban environment).

The scope of the C-ITS platform was focussed on the main technical (frequencies, hybrid communications, (cyber-)security and access to in-vehicle data) and legal issues (such as liability, data protection and privacy). It also covered standardisation, cost benefit analysis, business models, public acceptance, road safety and other implementation topics, international cooperation, etc. Dr. Amditis, Research Director of ICCS and the Head I-SENSE Research Group participated among other in the Platform's respective work and discussions. The opening ceremony of the large-scale demonstration of public transport automated vehicles, WITHOUT DRIVER, in the City of Trikala, Greece was held with great success on Tuesday, November 10th 2015.

leoforiaThe demonstration will last 5 months and are conducted with the support of the Municipality of Trikala, e-Trikala S.A., the Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (ICCS), the Hellenic Ministry of Infrastructure, Transport and Networks, the company Robosoft, the Region of Thessaly and the Greek Police, within the framework of the European project CityMobil2. It is certainly worth mentioning that this is the first time in history that fully automated vehicles are driving in the city streets along with manually driven cars, which can only mean that the realization of these pilot tests in the City of Trikala is an endeavor both innovative and ground-breaking at an international level.

The European project CityMobil2, which is co-financed by the European Union under the 7th Framework programme for research, technological development and demonstration, focuses mainly on the promotion of the necessary legislative and regulatory adjustments to allow the future deployment of automated transport systems, with basic aim to address the largest issues of most big cities, such as traffic congestion, environmental protection and road safety.

ICCS’s role in the CityMobil2 project is to define the technical characteristics of the automated vehicles that are already used in trials in many European cities, and in particular the requirements regarding the recognition and avoidance of obstacles and other objects along their path. ICCS also contributed to the design of the wireless communication amongst vehicles as well as to the design and installation of the necessary infrastructure of the control centre in Trikala. In addition, ICCS performed the traffic study for the system design in the City of Trikala, in close co-operation with the company e-Trikala S.A. On top of all that, ICCS significantly contributed to the discussions and efforts that took place in order to reform the Greek regulatory framework so as to allow the performance of the demonstration in the City of Trikala.

sinentefksi typouBefore the opening ceremony, a press conference took place, during which all involved in this pilot site stakeholders presented in detail this important effort. The representatives of the basic stakeholders that made this demonstration a reality took the stand as follows:

  • Mr. Dimitris Papastergiou, Mayor of the City of Trikala;

During this press conference, Dr. Angelos Amditis explained the role of ICCS in the conduction of the demonstration in the City of Trikala, while he stated the following for the importance of the demonstration of automated vehicles in the City at an international level:

“ …automation in transport is approaching on an international level, especially if you take into consideration the fact that in the next three years, almost 300 million euros are going to be spent on research activities focusing on automated transportation, and that in the E.U. alone. Therefore, we can all understand that what is taking place today in Trikala is a breakthrough with a huge impact. Automated transportation doesn’t work in competition with the public transportation modes we are using today. On the contrary, they are working complementary to them in order to assist the overall design and planning of public transport, so as to become more viable, safer and with multiple benefits (in development, in the environment….) for the user as much as for the city itself. I would like to point out that according to the above info, it is now clear that the citizens of the city of Trikala are playing a determining role in the evolution of automated transportation since they will be the first in the world to evaluate this kind of development, and they are expected to contribute drastically to the final design of these systems according to their needs”.

Kentro ElegxouAfter the end of the press conference, the different stakeholders visited the vehicle control center and boarded the 4 available automated vehicles for a ride along the predetermined route which has been specifically designed, for this purpose, route inside the urban environment of Trikala.

Press release • Launch of a New H2020 European project • 13 July 2015•

PASSME: Personalised Airport Systems for Seamless Mobility and Experience Project to Deliver Real Time Saving for Passengers

13 July 2015: European experts in the fields of aviation, transport, interior design and communications will work together with academia to reduce passenger waiting times by 1 hour, through one of the EU’s newest projects’- PASSME, where the Institute of Communication and Computer Systems-ICCS is actively participating as a partner. This 4, 9 € million project  is funded by the EU’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme and will be implemented by 12 European partners from 7 European Countries in a period of 36 months.  PASSME innovative technologies will be piloted in Hamburg (Germany) and Schiphol Airports (The Netherlands).

The global market forecast 2013 – 2032 of Airbus anticipates that air traffic will grow at 4.7% annually resulting in an increase in the number of air passengers passing through airports. Consequently there is a need for new innovative solutions which will increase the comfort and speed of air travel for all passengers. Stakeholders including airlines and airports will also benefit from the application of the project results.

PASSME innovations aim to reduce the passenger travel and navigation time from the entrance of the airport of departure to leaving the arrival airport by 60 minutes. This will be achieved by integrating information between all stakeholders and transforming airport and aircraft operations and interiors to make the passenger journey times more comfortable and seamless.

The overall ambition of the PASSME project is to achieve the following high level targets:

  • Faster luggage drop off and collection (30 minutes).
  • Reducing queues at key touch points through forecasting and capacity adaptations (10 minutes).
  • Smart boarding systems (10 minutes).
  • Reducing buffers due to increased predictability (10 minutes).
  • Provide passengers with continuous access to timely information in order to forecast demand.
  • Improve the quality of experience for at least 70% of passengers throughout the door to door experience.

At the end of this project which is due to end in May 2018, PASSME will hope to have achieved the following breakthroughs:

  • A real time passenger centric system for managing passenger flows.
  • A passenger independent system for managing luggage flows.
  • Radically re-designed passenger centric airport and airplane processes and facilities.
  • A personalised device and smartphone application.

A Community of Practitioners (CoP) will also be established, including stakeholders and end-users (from different domains) including airports and airlines. This will give stakeholders the opportunity to give feedback on the development of the PASSME system that will benefit passengers and airports (by reducing bottle necks).

Within PASSME, ICCS has a two-fold role. On the one had ICCS will be leading the development of a personalised device for allowing the passenger to be kept informed of all the aspects of his/her journey, including navigational information in the airport and possible delays, and also for providing passenger centric information back to the PASSME backbone system. On the other hand ICCS will develop an indoor localisation service, to provide location information to the PASSME system, allowing it to make accurate forecasts of possible delays. ICCS will have a major role also in the integration of the overall system and on the testing of the final solution. ICCS will also assist in dissemination and security related management.

NEXES RIA Kick-Off Meeting

The (R) Evolution of Emergency Services Starts Now !

On June 22nd-23rd, the Kick-Off Meeting (KOM) of the Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Action NEXES – NEXt generation Emergency Services has been held to signal the Action’s official launch on May 1st 2015.

Hosted in Lancaster UK by the Action’s Coordinator, RINICOM, the NEXES KOM event gathered the seventeen partners of the NEXES Consortium and the European Commision's Research Executive Agency (REA) representative, Mrs. Elina Manova, the NEXES Project Officer.

Throughout two days, NEXES’s large group of academia, industry and end-users experts discussed today’s reality within European emergency services, exchanging valuable experiences that provide the actual basis where the next generation of emergency services will be built upon. Benefiting from future media, including internet-based technologies and mobile apps, emergency services and citizens will have more and richer channels of interaction in case of need, namely serving those citizens experiencing disability or having special needs that still live estranged to accessible and universal emergency services. On a cheerful tone, NEXES partners discussed and defined the agenda for the following months as they engage citizens and specialists in emergency services and operations, in communications, networks, localisation and in information technologies to address the different social, technological, organisational, regulatory and ethical dimensions at play.

NEXES ( is a research and innovation action dedicated to the creation of the next generation of emergency services, innovative 112 services that display total conversation, improved location information and enhanced interoperability capabilities in emergencies. Integrating IP-based communications and interoperability technologies, NEXES promises to start a new revolution in emergency services, to the benefit of a more secure society.

ICCS main role in this project is the development and integration of an IP-based eCall implementation into the NEXES system. Moreover, it is responsible for providing the vision and recommendations for smart devices to be able to operate within a Next Generation Emergency System.

CityMobil2 goal is to address and finally remove three main barriers to the deployment of automated road vehicles: the implementation framework, the legal framework and the unknown wider economic effect.  To succeed this 12 cities have been revised their mobility plans to adopt effective automated transport systems from which the best 7 cases have been selected to organise demonstrations for a period of 6 to 8 months. The project has been procured two sets of automated vehicles and delivers them to the pilot cities for demonstrations to take place. We are very glad to announce that among these pilot cities is the Greek City of Trikala where ICCS is actively participating.

A new EU project has launched to pave the way towards the next generation integrated bridge management and monitoring systems.

Athens, 3 June 2015. Over the next three and a half years the European project SENSKIN will improve Structural Health Monitoring techniques for transport infrastructure through the development of an innovative monitoring and management system for bridges based on an inexpensive, low power, wireless, skin-like sensor. The project, which consists of 13 partners from 7 countries, officially launched its activities with the organisation of the consortium kick-off meeting that was held in Athens, Greece on 2-3 June 2015.

Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is expected to play a predominant role in the management of the transport infrastructure nowadays mainly because much of the expected growth in traffic demand will have to be accommodated on existing infrastructure with widespread signs of deterioration, while climate changes may negatively affect the infrastructure loading. Yet, SHM techniques continue to rely on point-based, as opposed to spatial, sensing requiring a dense network of these point-sensors increasing considerably the monitoring cost. Furthermore, conventional sensors fail at relatively low strains and their communication system is unreliable in extreme service conditions: thus, they do not provide a foolproof alarm of an imminent structural collapse. 

The European project, SENSKIN, responds to the above by developing an inexpensive, low power, wireless, skin-like sensor that offers spatial sensing of irregular surfaces (transportation bridges in particular). This sensor will be able to withstand and monitor large strains and to self-monitor/report. Emerging Delay Tolerant Networks technology will be also applied so that the output of the sensors is transmitted even under difficult conditions, such as, in the case of an earthquake, where some communication networks are inoperable. Additionally, SENSKIN as a monitoring system will be supported by a Decision-Support-System for proactive condition-based structural intervention under operating loads and intervention after extreme events. The SENSKIN technology will be implemented in the case of bridges and tested, refined, evaluated and benchmarked on an actual bridge.

Following these, SENSKIN is expected to drastically reduce traffic disruptions from structural inspection and assessment works, decrease inspection and assessment costs, increase the safety of passengers and improve the working conditions of inspectors.

The Institute of communication and Computer Systems (ICCS) is the SENSKIN project Coordinator and technical manager while it will also lead the work on the collection of end-user requirements and the design of the system architecture. Furthermore ICCS will undertake the design and implementation of the energy storage and harvesting unit, the sensor packaging and the overall system integration.

Towards the development of automated driving applications for daily traffic 

Team Photo 07 webAthens, 6 May 2015, More than 60 people coming from OEMs, Tier1 suppliers, Research Institutes and Universities are meeting today and tomorrow in Athens, 

Greece withthe opportunity of the General Assembly of the AdaptIVe IP, coordinated by the Volkswagen Group Research. The project develops various automated driving functions for daily traffic by dynamically adapting the level of automation to situation and driver status while legal issues that might impact successful market introduction are also addressed.

During these two days event the 29 project partners will have the opportunity to be informed and thoroughly discuss the first year project developments, the achieved results and plan the next steps for accomplishment of the project’s goals. A number of parallel meetings are also organised focusing on specific issues as Legal aspects and Human factors issues, Evaluation methods and framework as well as all related technical issues and applications.

The General Assembly is being organised by the Institute of Communication and Computer System (ICCS) partner of AdaptIVe and member of its Steering Committee.
