Aachen│June 28-29

AdaptIVe 3AdaptIVe 1 TheAdaptIVe 2 ITS Team of I-SENSE Group had activelly participated  in the final event of the European project AdaptIVe, Europe’s largest research project on automated driving. The team has been a member of the “close distance scenarios” working group and part of the   project’s Steering Committee and Technical Expert Group as well as Liaison manager responsible for establishing links with related projects, Working groups, organisations and other expert communities working on the field of vehicle automation.

More than 250 experts from 20 countries all over the world joined the AdaptIVe Final Event, “Driving Automation”, in Aachen, Germany, on 28 and 29 June 2017. Opened by Erik Jonnaert, Secretary General of the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association ACEA, and Wolfgang Höfs, European Commission, the conference focused on the technology behind the functions. The AdaptIVe implementation scenarios (low speed parking scenarios, mid-speed urban driving, and high-speed highway driving up to 130 km/h) and approach per demonstrator vehicle have been presented for each driving scenario category.

Cross-cutting topics that have been on the project’s agenda such as fail-tolerant system architecture, human factors, legal aspects and safety validation as well as evaluation methods, were thoroughly presented and discussed. Progress made in the field of connected automated driving has been particularly tackled by AdaptIVe EU researchers that presented how they succeeded in improving existing sensors and in linking them to Vehicle-to-X technologies for extended and more accurate perception of the vehicle's surrounding environment.

AdaptIVe 4AdaptIVe 7A presentation on the future of automated driving as seen by the Perception platform viewpoint was given by dr. A. Amditis under the title “Sensing the vehicle environment”.

A comprehensive parallel exhibition placed close to the conference made the results tangible for all paricipants. The results presented through:

  • posters from the research areas,
  • short technical talks in the exhibition area
  • videos on V2X based merging manoeuvres or legal aspects displayed the advancement of automated driving research by AdaptIVe.

AdaptIVe 5AdaptIVe 6I-SENSE specific research and development role in AdaptIVe was to contribute in the specification, development and testing of the environment perception platform for automation in close-distance scenarios. Focus of the I-SENSE research was cast on single modal simultaneous localization and mapping based on LIDAR data in AdaptIVe parking scenarios under GPS shortage. Parking garages' blueprints digitalization using OSM format, methods for grid maps alignment and metrics for quantitative mapping evaluation have been developed as part of this work. This work was presented in the exhibition area  by members of the I-SENSE ITS technical team (Panagiotis, Anastasia, Richardos) through a short technical talk on map generation based on lidar data for gps restricted environments, a poster and a pc-based demo.

AdaptIVe 8AdaptIVe 9AdaptIVe 10One major acitivity of the AdaptIVe Final Event was also the two days driving demonstrations performed in and around the city of Aachen. Dedicated driving tours run by nine demonstrator vehicles took place on highways, in a simulated urban environment and in a multi-level parking garage (including also the visit to the new highly dynamic driving simulator of the ika RWTH Aachen University).

After the accomplishment of the project final review, the European Commission sincerely thanked the project team for the outstanding results and Final Event - and rated the project as "excellent".

ICCS is participating in the ALICE European Technology Platform in Logistics (http://www.etp-logistics.eu) since 2014, being an active member of the Working Group 3 Information Systems for Inter-connected Logistics.

On the 7th of July 2017, during the ALICE Plenary Meeting in Graz, Austria, the Elections for the ALICE Executive Board and Steering Committee took place.

Angelos Amditis, our Research Director, was elected in the Steering Committee of ALICE with a vast majority of the votes.

The Steering Committee has a wide participation of key logistics actors, from the industrial sector, such as P&G, FM Logistics, Poste Italiane, MAN, VOLVO, PTV and GS1, to major intermodal hubs, such as Valencia Port, Interporto Bologna and high-profile research centres, like Fraunhofer IML, Mines Paris Tech and KLU.

This achievement places our Group in an even more prominent position in the domain of Transport and Logistics and increases our visibility within a key actor and policy maker of the European supply chain.

Video-Explanation of Interfaces Evacuate

Dr. Angelos Amditis, Research Director and Head of the I-Sense Group of the Institute of Communication & Computer Systems (ICCS), has been re-elected in 2017 as Steering Body member of the TM 2.0 platform.

The TM2.0 ERTICO Platform was launched in 2014 at the Helsinki European ITS Congress by TomTom and Swarco-Mizar and now groups together more than 30 members from all ITS sectors focussing on new solutions for advanced active traffic management. It aims to agree on common interfaces to facilitate the exchange of data and information from the road vehicles and the Traffic Management and Control Centres (TMC), and back, improving the total value chain for consistent management and traffic services as well as avoiding conflicting guidance information on the road and in the vehicles.

The 4th Pilot exercise of the eVACUATE Project was obtained on May 2017 at San Mames Metro Station, in Metro Bilbao Premises.

Main Outcomes:

The last pilot contained three different meetings:

  1. Training (particularly the COP);
  2. Evacuation exercise;
  3. Simulation exercise.

eVACUATE Team worked together as a well trained team and the training, evacuation exercise and simulation exercise went very well. We have shown that we learned from the previous pilots and prepared well for the final one. Problems we experienced in the previous pilots were anticipated and did not cause new or similar ones. Both from an organizational point of view, as well as from a technical point of view the pilot went well.

The training was held at Basauri office on Thursday afternoon. We trained three persons to operate COP. The training was in translated into Spanish and well received. The COP proved to be easily understood and operated.

The pilot demonstration took place in Sam Mamés metro station in Bilbao on Friday, May 5th at 01:00 hours. The preparations for the evacuation exercise started 1.5 hours earlier, after the metro station closed up for the night.

eVACAUTE Team needed only 35 minutes to a complete deployment of the eVACUATE system in San Mamés metro station, including a system test. The volunteers, participating in the evacuation exercise arrived already at midnight, reaching the number of approximately 90 volunteers in the evacuation exercise, among which about 15 interested security personnel to attend the exercise at the location of COP!

The evacuation exercise was, contrary to the previous ones, not in English, but Spanish.  The evacuation exercise was divided into 5 loops. The last loop was a complex one including setting of smoke alarms, manual alarms and a full evacuation scenario in which one of the exits was blocked.

Reconass

RECONASS is organizing its final “Post-Crisis Damage and Needs Assessment of Buildings for Response, Reconstruction and Recovery Planning – Workshop” within ISCRAM 2017 on May 21-24, in Albi, France.

The objective of this workshop is to discuss the importance and trends of structural and non-structural assessment techniques and methods (civil structural health monitoring) applied in critical or conventional buildings as a means to avoid partial and total collapses when disastrous incidents take place (e.g. earthquakes, explosions, etc.). Such assessments include - but not limited to – the deployment of novel monitoring sensor networks (in-building, environmental and aerial sensors) in conjunction to information and disaster management systems that provide the stakeholders rapidly with an evaluation of the magnitude of the disaster. Additionally, the assessment reports generated drive response, reconstruction and recovery planning efforts towards saving lives, restoring functionalities and building back better.

The following topics will be covered during the workshop:

  • Structural and non-structural engineering
  • Emergency management and planning
  • Training and simulations
  • Collaboration and integration
  • Response and health monitoring of structures
  • Lessons from recent earthquakes and explosions
  • Practice case studies
