Our economies and our lives depend on the efficient movement of goods; movement that is underpinned by complex transport and logistics chains. But, while delivering goods from producer to end user, transport and logistics systems are under increasing pressure to deliver greater efficiency, more sustainability and improved cost-effectiveness. A number of initiatives from ERTICO – ITS Europe are addressing these challenges and creating the transport and logistics systems of tomorrow.

Transport and logistics are facing the same challenges as other sectors – the need to increase efficiency, improve sustainability and lower costs. For transport and logistics however, this is further compounded by the need to offer a better customer service in the face of growing customer expectations, and to ensure compliance with ever more stringent regulations.

One of the biggest transport problems globally is congestion, especially on the roads. Congestion costs Europe about 1 % of its GDP every year and is the cause of a large amount of carbon emissions. Another challenge is the digitalisation process of transport networks and infrastructure. If fully implemented, this could better integrate road, rail, air and waterborne travel into a seamless logistics chain across Europe.

The sustainability of urban logistics is a challenge for rapidly growing cities worldwide. Sharing is a big story for logistics – from Uber-style approaches to last-mile delivery, to more formal joint ventures and partnerships at corporate level. The whole sector is redefining collaboration through change, but is still hampered by inconsistencies in everything from shipment sizes to processes and IT systems. Large e-commerce players as well as various start-ups view last mile services as a key differentiator from their competitors. Services are in competition for traffic lanes and parking spaces as well as being vulnerable to other disruptions, like traffic accidents, traffic jams or weather.

Services will need an active data exchange and an open location platform to host the appropriate data. ‘New digitized innovations and services will require collaboration since nobody can do this alone,’ says Mika Rytkonen CEO behind data driven solution HERE Tracking. ‘New innovations, such as HERE Tracking, automated vehicles or active traffic management, are entering the market and are all powered by data. ERTICO with its innovative platforms will play a key role in driving industry collaboration to make transportation smarter.’ One of these platforms is ERTICO’s TM 2.0 that enhances logistical efficiencies by providing better insight into highly congested delivery areas such as rails and ports.

Also key to meeting these daunting challenges will be improving the way that elements in the freight and logistics chain communicate with each other and exchange data. This is particularly true for highly congested hubs such as ports. ERTICO, a public-private partnership that develops, promotes and deploys Intelligent Transport Systems and Services (ITS), understands the key importance of improving interoperability and connectivity when it comes to optimising cargo flows and streamlining supply chain management.

ERTICO has set itself the goal of achieving fully digital, interoperable and automated freight and logistics operations in Europe by 2025 and seamless logistics and freight transport by 2030. With this goal in mind the partnership has recently announced its intention to develop the new LogistiX hub for a trusted data exchange in supply chain and logistics.

Dr. Johanna Tzanidaki, Director of Innovation and Deployment at ERTICO, said: ‘The LogistiX hub will be a knowledge and business incubation centre, which will help companies to become more competitive with regards to logistics and supply chain services using digital technologies. Offering a catalogue of leading edge ideas, solutions, networks and compliance testing it will enable the optimisation of international end-to-end data visibility of the supply chain.’ The LogistiX hub will be formally launched at the ITS Congress in Copenhagen in September 2018.

Leveraging the state-of-the-art

To achieve fully digital and interoperable freight and logistics chains it will be necessary to leverage cutting-edge technologies and solutions, for example autonomous mobility and unmanned aerial vehicles (drones). But the greatest impact in this area will undoubtedly come from exploiting synergies between ICT solutions, such as 5G, IoT, end-to-end visibility networks and blockchain.

ICT platform connectivity is a core consideration of ERTICO’s AEOLIX project. This project is developing a digital ecosystem to better manage, plan and synchronise freight and logistics operations across Europe. AEOLIX will improve the overall competitiveness of goods transport in the supply chain by enabling low-complexity and low-cost connectivity of local ICT platforms and systems. It will also overcome fragmentation of data exchange and ensure scalability, interoperability and visibility across the supply chain. The resulting automation of the data flow between logistic chain stakeholders will make management of their relationships more flexible, supporting an improved workflow across companies.

The improved connectivity that the project will deliver will enable the scalable, trusted and secure exchange of information. This, in turn, will improve the overall competitiveness of goods transport in the supply chain and make it more environmentally, economically and socially sustainable. Improved connectivity will also support cooperative ITS solutions, which will also improve logistics operations by generating real-time traffic information, allowing better tracking and tracing of goods.

On May 9, 2018 took place at the CEN/CENELEC premises in Brussels the kick off meeting of the CEN-CENELEC Workshop with the title “Interoperability framework for functional components of a modular urban search and rescue robotic platform”. This workshop is part of the standardization activities of the FP7 EU project INACHUS. The aim of this CWA is to provide recommendations to enable interoperability between urban search and rescue (USaR) robotic platforms and the equipment, sensors and tools that are attached to them. This CWA is also intended to provide guidance to the principles for enabling USaR robotic platforms to operate in all ground search environments. In this way a generic platform can be adapted, designed and built for any possible search and rescue (SAR) scenario on the ground. The final objective of this project is to develop a  CEN/CENELEC Workshop Agreement (CWA) guide for the technical and operational interoperability of  USaR  robotic platforms. Chair of the workshop is Dr. Angelos Amditis (also the coordinator of the INACHUS project) and Dr. Vasileios Sourlas was elected Vice President, whereas the secreteriat services are provided by the British Standards Institution – BSI. More info can be found in the following link:

I-SENSE is proud to participate in one of the most innovative EU-funded H2020 projects that aims to deliver industry-driven, passenger-centric novel solutions for passengers, airports and airlines to address the anticipated increase in demand for commercial flights in Europe by 2050. Specifically, the main objective of PASSME project is to reduce unwanted travel time within the airports by at least 60 minutes by integrating information between all stakeholders and transforming airport and aircraft operations and interiors to make the passenger journey time efficient, seamless, robust and relaxed.

Within PASSME, ICCS had a two-fold role. On the one hand, ICCS had led the development of a personalised application that enables the passenger to be in control of the time spent at the airport and to feel more relaxed and aware. Specifically, the application is allowing the passenger to be kept informed of all the aspects of his/her journey, including navigational information in the airport and possible delays, and also, is providing passenger centric information back to the PASSME central system. This application was successfully tested on 14th of March at Schiphol airport by a number of project partners through a dedicated demonstration.  

On the other hand, ICCS had developed an indoor localisation service, to provide location information to the PASSME system, allowing it to make accurate forecasts of possible delays. ICCS had also a major role in the integration of the overall system and on the testing of the final solution.

The IX installment of the CAD Webinar Series will take place on May 9th, 2018  on the topic of “Designing cooperative interaction of automated vehicles with other road users – The EU project interACT“.

As Automated Vehicles (AVs) will be deployed in mixed traffic, they need to interact safely and efficiently with other traffic participants. The interACT project is working towards the safe integration of AVs into mixed traffic environments. In order to do so, interACT analyses todays’ human-human interaction strategies, and implement and evaluate solutions for safe, cooperative, and intuitive interactions between AVs and both their on-board driver and other traffic participants.

This webinar will present the first results of the project on scenario definition and the observation of human-human interaction in mixed traffic environments from three European countries (Germany, Greece, & the UK).

NEXES Research and Innovation action (http://nexes.eu/) and the I-SENSE Group of ICCS are organising NEXES’ 1st demonstration activity dedicated to Automated Emergency Services as an one day Workshop open for the public with invitees from Greek and European Next Generation Emergency Services and researchers.

The workshop will take place in Athens, Greece in February 21st, 2018 and will present, via small scale end to end exercises (live demos), the research results of the project, dealing with the future of next generation automated (non-human initiated) emergency calls as specified within NEXES Machine2Machine/Internet of Things-enabled solutions and prototypes’ development. This work capitalises on the principle that human-initiated emergency calls and automated emergency calls, originating from telematics and user equipment such as tablets, smartphones, and sensors, should be handled or processed similarly.

The fifth installment of the CAD Webinar Series will take place on 16 November on the topic of “Demonstrating automated road transport in urban environment: the CityMobil2 project experiences“.

CityMobil2 was a project co-funded by the EU’s FP7 for research and technological development. The project started in September 2012, ran for 4 years and had 45 partners drawn from system suppliers, city authorities (and local partners), the research community, and networking organisations.  CityMobil2 set up a platform for the demonstration of automated road transport systems in real life urban environments, which was implemented in West Lausanne, La Rochelle, Trikala, Oristano and Vantaa, in order to understand factors that influence acceptance of such systems. In addition to the demonstration activities, research was undertaken into the technical, financial, cultural, and behavioural aspects along with effects on land use policies and how new systems fit into existing infrastructure in different cities.

Webinar attendees will be informed about the lessons learnt as regards organising such large-scale demonstrations and about key findings that will support future development and research activities in the area.

The DAISSy Research Group of the Hellenic Open University (http://daissy.eap.gr) organizes an Info day entitled: “Museums, Skills and New Perspectives in the digital era” on Monday 06 November 2017, from 15:00 to 20:00 in the building of Library and Information Center of the Hellenic Open University, in Patras, Greece (street Patron - Clauss 183). Aim of the Info day is the identification of the created needs of the professionals of culture and museum due to the quickening pace of the adoption of ICT in the cultural sector. Firstly, will be presented the European Project Mu.SA - Museum Sector Alliance (http://www.project-musa.eu/) and its first results, which are the output of the research in the shortage of digital and transferrable skills identified in the museum sector, as well as the relative educational and training programmes provided in Greece and in the respective countries of the consortium.

Moreover, distinctive lecturers from the academia and museums will develop their speeches towards issues in digital culture such as:

  • the need of education and training in the cultural sector;
  • the usage of new technologies in the museums;
  • the Digital Cultural Heritage and its management;
  • experiences, new challenges and perspectives in the digital society of Cultural Heritage.

The Info day addresses museum professionals, students and graduates of cultural programmes, scientists, researchers and everyone interested in museum or cultural sector’s recruitment.

The attendance in the Info day is free of charge. Certifications of participation will be assigned to the attendants.

The project PLUGGY, which is coordinated by the I-SENSE Group, will be there to interact with the attendees and to present them its innovative concept and assets, aiming to the development of a Facebook like social platform and a suite of smartphone apps, expected to enable individuals, community groups, industry, museums and countries as a whole to bring out, document and share their heritage online and thereby celebrate Europe’s collective heritage.

20170929 185417I-SENSE Group joined European Researchers’ Night, held in the premises of the National Technical University in Athens downtown and came closer to the general public and especially the young people and the student communities. The I-SENSE Group’s representatives presented its topics of research and its research and innovation activities and increased awareness of its wide variety of projects to several young attendants.

European Researchers’ Night is one of the most famous European Union initiatives, in which research, science and innovation are celebrated. The event takes place simultaneously in over 300 European cities, on the last Friday of September.
