VR Lessons for enhancing Occupational Health and Safety – A unique collaboration between I-SENSE Group and ELINYAE

1The increasing demands of the rapidly changing workplace landscape require the development of integrated Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) services, that are compatible with modern reality. The continuous improvement of working conditions and quality of the working environment has become a top priority for businesses and societies, both at the national and European level.

In this context, the I-SENSE Group of ICCS is proud to announce the collaboration with ELINYAE, the Hellenic Institute for Occupational Health and Safety. ELINYAE is developing a system for the standardization of training for Health and Safety issues within the work environment, which is geared towards all stakeholders in Health and Safety management, but also any other interested party. However, the system is beneficial to all citizens, as health and safety is a public good, which spans to all activities of public life and not only the workplace.

The system is based on innovative training tools that integrate applications of VR (Virtual Reality) technology. The purpose is to provide the trainees, who are working in high-risk fields, with a health and safety education. The trainees will be selected by OAED (Manpower Employment Organization) in collaboration with ELINYAE and will have the opportunity to gain specialized OHS skills. Once the training is completed, they will receive a certificate of attendance, specific to the skill set they have acquired.

Within the framework of this collaboration, the I-SENSE Group has taken the lead in developing innovative and specialized services and applications to ensure a safer and healthier work environment. These services contribute to the improvement of the quality of life and peace of mind in the workplace and also enhance the competitiveness and productivity of businesses.

More specifically, the innovative social web platform and smart mobile application developed by I-SENSE Group provides VR Lessons, to support employee education for the promotion of Health and Safety in the workplace. The VR lessons will be easily accessible and based on virtual reality interplay techniques that include VR Simulation of workplaces for Training and Interaction in those Virtual Environments using 360º photos. The trainer will produce possible workplace hazard scenarios in which, the trainees will need to respond using the innovative VR tools of the platform and the application. The focus in all scenarios lies in protecting the employees from possible workplace hazards and training them to recognize the good and bad practices within each scenario, in order to be able to act more effectively.

The VR Lessons were presented by its main developer and member of the I-SENSE Group Mr. Spyros Bolierakis, during the 2nd Hellenic Conference on Occupational Health and Safety titled “A gaze into the future”, which was held on 18 and 19 November 2019 at the Megaron Athens International Conference Centre, in Greece. The I-SENSE Group participated in the Conference with a booth.  I-SENSE Group Director, Dr. Angelos Amditis, also held a presentation about the technological changes the fourth Industrial revolution brings in the field of health in the workplace. The conference attempted to record current health and safety challenges in the workplace, knowing however that the boundaries between work and other social activities are now fluid.
