Action plan towards the Smart Port concept in the Mediterranean Area
The SMART-PORT project is co-funded by the MED transnational programme of European territorial cooperation and aims at contributing to sustainable growth of the Mediterranean container ports by establishing the appropriate conditions for the adoption of new management energy models based on low environmental impact and triggering innovation of both technologies and processes. The strategic importance of the smart-port holistic concept (emphasizing particularly operational and energy efficiency, competitiveness and environmental impact aspects) within the MED space is challenge that is better targeted by means of coordinated effort in transnational cooperation schemes. Five partners from Mediterranean countries, namely Andalusian Institute of Technology (IAT), Institute of Communication and Computer Systems, Innovative Technologies for Environmental Control and Sustainable Development, Prometni Institut Ljubljana/Institute of Traffic and Transport Ljubljana and University of Cádiz formed a consortium to lead and develop the SMART-PORT project.
Besides contributing to the definition of the Smart Port criteria, ICCS has led the Smart Port data collection and collation from container terminals of ports of Zeebrugge, Antwerp and Piraeus. The Institute is responsible for the creation of the Smart Port action plan based on Smart Port criteria and advantages/disadvantages of MED ports and establishment of the network of Mediterranean containers ports for promotion and improvement of the MED Smart Port concept.
